World Teachers' Day on 5 October 2026 marked the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, according to UNESCO.

The organisation's account of this year's observance connects professional status with teachers' autonomy, working conditions, support and participation in policy decisions. It also identifies digital technology, climate change, migration and displacement among the pressures affecting the profession.

The recommendation provides international reference points for preparation, recruitment and employment. UNESCO notes that a separate recommendation adopted in 1997 addresses teaching personnel in higher education.

Our perspective

For school leaders, the anniversary offers a useful prompt: ask teachers which parts of their working day help them teach effectively and which make that work harder. Recognition can begin with listening to those specific experiences.
